Writers Room / Pixar study
E2 research document
The Pixar Study
Four visual studies of Sally and Chadwick in the white startup room, working the big idea board. Each study below is the full text version: who is in it, where they are, what is happening, and what it taught us about the room. Click any image for the full-size file.
Study 1
The Board
Who
Sally (green utility jacket, red shirt, brown side ponytail with a red tie) and Chadwick (navy "Believe." t-shirt, jeans), seen from behind.
Where
The white startup room. The entire back wall is a giant board under a hand-lettered "OUR BIG IDEAS" banner, covered in hundreds of colorful cards, photos, and sketches.
What is happening
The two of them pin new cards to a wall that is already full. The board is the mission statement of the room: if it happened and it mattered, it gets pinned.
What it taught us
The room is bigger than any one idea. The wall is the main character. Everything else in the study flows from this image.
Study 2
The Pair
Who
Sally and Chadwick, mid-laugh, working side by side.
Where
Same white room, tall windows, high tables. The board runs the full height of the wall beside them.
What is happening
They pin cards together and laugh about it. The work is joyful, not precious. Cards in hand, ideas mid-air.
What it taught us
The collaboration is the product. Two head writers, one wall, zero ego. This is the image we open the story with.
Study 3
The Pin
Who
Sally in close up, reaching high. Chadwick beside her holding a neat stack of fresh cards.
Where
Right at the board. Cards everywhere: "Bigger Brighter Braver," "Good Ideas Change Lives," "People Ideas Progress."
What is happening
The craft moment. Sally places one card exactly where it belongs while Chadwick keeps the supply coming. Writer and producer, in one frame.
What it taught us
Every card is placed on purpose. The room runs on small deliberate acts, not big dramatic ones.
Study 4
The Step Back
Who
Sally and Chadwick, arms crossed, standing back from the wall.
Where
The full wall in frame: hundreds of cards, a rocket sketch, "Ideas People Better Tomorrow," "Let's Build This."
What is happening
The payoff beat. They step back and look at what they built together. Proud, not smug.
What it taught us
End every session with the step back. Look at the wall. That feeling is the whole show.
